Stay Safe at the 61st Annual Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Mar 10, 2017 | By Abilheira Law, LLC | Read Time: < 1 minute | Criminal

On March 11, 2017, the 61st Annual Newport St. Patrick’s Day parade will be held in Newport, Rhode Island. Every year, thousands of people flock to the streets to celebrate the Irish holiday and each year hundreds are arrested for various crimes.

Last year, over eighty (80) individuals were arrested in Newport alone, along with dozens of others in neighboring towns. In 2015, fifty-seven (57) individuals were arrested for alcohol related offenses, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and simple assault, and eleven (11) individuals were arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) in Newport.

If you plan to attend the 2017 Newport St. Patrick’s Day parade consider a few tips from the Newport criminal defense attorneys at Abilheira Law:

  • If you are under the age of twenty-one, do not consume alcohol. Police will be patrolling for underage drinking.
  • Even if you are over the age of twenty-one, do not consume alcoholic beverages in public. Police will be enforcing the “open container” law.
  • Keep alcohol consumption to a minimum and enjoy some Irish food.
  • Designate a sober driver or use Uber, if you plan on drinking during the parade. Police will be on patrol in Newport, Portsmouth, Middletown, and Bristol looking for drunk drivers leaving the parade.
  • Avoid altercations with rowdy party-goers that could lead to disorderly conduct and simple assault charges.
  • If you find yourself getting arrested, be respectful to police and do not resist arrest.
  • Do not make any statements to police, because anything you say will be used against you.

If you are arrested and charged with a crime before, during, or after the parade, call the Newport Rhode Island Criminal Defense Lawyers at Abilheira Law. Our skilled lawyers are available 24/7 to take your call and start your defense!
