New Year’s Eve is often one of the busiest nights of the year for law enforcement and public safety officials, as Providence and Rhode Island residents ring in the New Year with friends and family. This year, however, Providence police made only one DUI arrest, despite a significant increase in statewide patrol.
The lack of arrests is attributed to programs aimed to eliminate drunk driving altogether, including one spearheaded by local firefighters. Rob Crellin and Hans Ramsden of the Providence Fire Department volunteered to give free rides to local residents who had been drinking. Ultimately, 50 individuals took advantage of the free taxi service. The two firefighters have said that due to the success of the program, they are looking into expanding it to all major holidays.
